The results of a study into the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on air quality in Ukraine and Moldova are to be presented at a top-level meeting of officials from the United Nations Development Programme, Ukraine, Moldova and the European Space Agency on 12 February 2021.
The study is a joint ESA-UNDP effort to monitor air pollution in Ukraine and Moldova in the COVID-19 context. The project utilized Earth observation data to analyze air quality and emissions before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
UNDP has for some time been testing the use of Earth observation (EO) data to understand, model, and predict natural processes, as well as the current and future state and dynamics of the human–Earth system. Some of the advantages of EO tools is that they are non-intrusive and objective. The system allows the mapping of agricultural land use, air and water quality, coastal subsidence, and forest state among other important data. It can deliver near-real-time data at a global level, which can also be used for local and regional needs.
The objective of the regional meeting is to present the results of the study on COVID-19 Impact on Air Quality in Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, and discuss the opportunities to extend the use of Earth Observation data in policymaking at local and regional level
